Online Business Applications
An Online Business Application is typically a custom-built business application used by a business. In the old days they were built as an internal software programme designed to run locally on a PC or Local Area Network.
It may have been built because an off-the-shelf product could not sufficiently handle the business's need. Today, such applications tend to be built in HTML and are hosted on a web server. If only used internally by staff, they are called an Intranet.
Often they are now an end-to-end online business in their own right, being used online by customers as well as internally by staff to run and manage the business.
Many examples exist including;
- a real estate listing service where clients can search for the property of their choice, contact respective agents and where uploading the new listings information can be easily managed,
- a dating site where new members can upload their details, photographs and profile information - with or without a payment - and then be able to search for and contact other member profiles in the system,
- a golf course booking system where golfers can search for available times and dates and then book their round and pay the green fees without telephoning the (usually engaged) club house.
Besides handling the "meat and potatoes" of a transaction, these Online Business Applications usually have in-depth reporting tools to analyse the businesses performance.
Search Engine Optimisation, Email Marketing and Pay per Click (SEM) frequently play a big role here.
