What is Search Engine Optimisation?
Search Engine Optimisation (or SEO) is the process of 'optimising' a website to increase search engine visibility. To be more precise, it is to achieve that visibility on the organic (left hand side) of the search results - the free side.
It is about anticipating what the Search Engine's algorithm is looking at and providing it with the site's content in such a form so as to achieve the highest ranking.
Think of it as being like having your bricks and mortar shopfront on the main street with lots of passing foot traffic versus tucking it away in a rear laneway where customers would have to already know where you are.
Unlike the shopfront example where you can choose to pay huge rent to expose your business to massive passing traffic, it is not possible to buy a high ranking position in the Search Engines.
SEO is about technique. It is all about knowing what the Search Engines are looking for, what Search Engines will ignore and it is about obeying the rules.
Obey the rules of SEO and the Search Engines will interpret the site as more important than other sites also related to the key words used by people to search for what you have.
Break the rules and the Search Engines will either block or ignore the site altogether or just relegate it to a part of their index which no one sees - say page 900 of the search results.
By gaining a higher ranking you are more likely to be found by your next prospective customers.
So, what are the rules of SEO?
Well they change from time to time and without notice and it is our job at Mr Web to keep fully apprised of the changes. Nowadays Search Engines are basically looking to see if they consider your site to be 'important'. They also want to be able to 'understand' what your site is about. That's where we come in.
